about

Ohio is home to 14 or 15 species of frogs and toads (biologists are uncertain if the southern leopard frog’s range still extends into southern Ohio). Enjoy their wonderfully diverse calls - ranging from guttural snores to adorable chirps - blended into original ambient soundscapes.

Tracks 1, 2, and 9 appear on Phantom Lure Production’s Frog Synth Coven compilation album (digital profits go to Save Ghana Frogs):

Details about the frog call recordings and related stuff: Some field recordings feature the calls of two or more species – the loudest call belongs to the species in the song title. I mixed calls louder than I did in Toad Song Sanctuary because I’m hoping this album may be a fun tool for species identification. Many tracks modulate calls with reverb, echo, and/or delay effects. Tracks 1 and 5 reverse some of the vocalization recordings, but only after the call is heard forward so listeners can still identify the species. To be consistent, I used species names for the song titles instead of subspecies names (e.g., “American Toad” instead of “Eastern American Toad”). The frog calls sourced from Lang Elliott, Carl Gerhardt, and Carlos Davidson; Rumble Viral; Ohio State University; California Herps; The Ohio Frog and Toad Calling Survey; Rick Shears; Iowa DNR. A nice resource for pictures and information about the frogs of Ohio: ohioamphibians.com/frogs/frogspecies.html

The album cover image is from a 1968 issue of the Journal of Herpetology.
